Obviously, there has been lots of talk of intermittent battery problems with ipod so I found this on ipodlounge.com and found it interesting:

OWC and NewerTech announce high-capacity batteries for older iPods
NewerTech and Other World Computing today introduced an ultra high-capacity 2100mAh Apple iPod replacement Lithium-Polymer (Li-Polymer) replacement battery for all first- and second-generation iPod models. The NewerTech battery is the highest capacity iPod battery on the market and provides 70 percent more capacity than standard Apple stock batteries. It is available immediately for $39.95. In addition, OWC and NewerTech announced a special promotion throughout the month of September where customers can get $10 off when they purchase the 2100mAh iPod replacement battery and the NewerTech RoadTrip! FM transmitter for the iPod together.

Not to sound dense, but...How do you get a battery into an iPod?

I brought mine into the Apple Store here in SF a couple weeks back because it wasn't holding a charge. He suggested I do a complete re-set, basically erase everything and re-install everything. It worked! But I did ask him if it HADN'T worked, would I come in for a new battery? He told me they don't take them apart to install a new battery, that they'd just replace my iPod altogether.

    Curious...

i heard something a few months ago about a guy that went to apple and said that his battery was dead and needed another... at that time, apple wasn't offering that service in hopes of people just buying a new iPod every two years... and i was told that now, you can send apple your iPod with 100 bucks and they will replace it... maybe the battery, maybe the whole thing... not sure...

once again, this is just what i was told... could be wrong here...

You can actually have the battery replaced and there are tons of websites that offer this at a much cheaper price than apple is offering.

          Check out this website:

hey jon, just realized that's the same site you linked to. :)

Anyway, its much cheaper than buying a whole new ipod or even getting a replacement for $100. I think Apple did this on purpose. I wish it was easier to replace the battery like it is on other brands of players.

              yup. um hummm...

i have a first gen. ipod. it still can go 8 to 9 hours strong continuously... i also did the smarty-pants thing and let the battery die all the way a few times when i first got it. perhaps that's the key to longevity? who knows...

Meghan- when you let the battery go all the way down, do you lose all your music and then have to resynch it? I dont know why, but I thought I remembered hearing that. I should probably do that- I have never run it all the way down but I think my new 3rd gen. ipod that I got 3 weeks ago can only go about 4 hours but I havent really tried it for longer than that because the battery icon showed no charge even though it was still playing.

when i got my ipod, i was about 2000 miles away from my computer with the tunage on it. so to make it die, i played the breakout game a lot. and since then it has died a couple times and i haven't had to reimport any songs.

Cool, thanks. I am currently have it hooked up to my stereo playing but not connected to a power source so I think I'll let it power down completely to see if I can prevent needing a new battery in just a year's time. I am also interested to see exactly how much battery time I get out of it.

Well, I have had my ipod running on its battery for about 7 hours now and its still going strong! I am pretty pleased considering some of the stories I have heard about people's problems with their batteries. I am going to completely power it down in the hopes that it will have a long, happy, healthy life ;)

the short story is let your iPod go to zero once a month. Your music *shouldn't* be impacted (I'd say you'd have a better chance getting NOW to endorse Bush for a second term).

The battery has a hw detection for charge level. Draining to zero calibrates it to the battery's actual capacity and should be done periodically. This shouldn't affect the life of the battery as much as making sure it stops trying to charge when it is full.

The battery will eventually degrade and need to be replaced. Average is 2 years. That's just the way it is (same with powerbooks and ibooks to, btw).

Sorry for the double post. It sent before I was done typing it. Check this out. So you all know the new Ipod has a new battery. Turns out this site is selling the batteries on their own for installation into the IpOD. Don't ask my how to install it, but it might solve a few of your battery problems. Well worth the price i think too instead od shelling out another 300 or 400 for the 4G iPod.

well, nothing lasts forever... as for me, the iPod is the only mp3 player i'll prolly ever buy so... i'll accept that it isn't perfect... small price to pay for all the other good stuff that iPods do...

Well, when I drained my battery down all the way it had been going strong for about 8 1/2 to 9 hours so I am pretty pleased with that. I will take your advice james and try to power it down every so often in the hopes that it will calibrate correctly. Such extended battery time is great while on trips (obviously) and there is nothing more annoying than being on a plane or an airport and being only part way there and having the battery go *zonk*.

the music is stored on a hard drive.
hard drives are like any other magnetic product, i.e. a casette tape. no power is required to hold onto the music.
